The garden of eat'n origin story
The Community Teaching Garden originated from feedback from various Cocke County organizations, expressing the need for a designated space to offer nutrition education through experiential learning. With a grant opportunity from the Tennessee Department of Health, this vision was transformed into reality. A naming contest was organized for the garden, resulting in the winning name "Garden of Eat’ N" submitted by Heather Marshall, a local resident and employee at the Cocke County Health Department, with roots in the community.
The Garden serves two primary purposes:
Transforming an underutilized brown space into a thriving garden to promote physical activity through gardening.
Enhancing nutrition education through interactive community garden experiences.
location
You can find the garden at the end of Harper Circle or Bailey Street in Newport, adjacent to the Boys and Girls Newport Club and the Newport Housing Authority Administration Office.
