What is kindergarten readiness?
Kindergarten readiness is a measurement of the knowledge, skills and behaviors that enable children to participate and succeed when they begin school. This sets the stage for future learning and overall success. There are many different skills and behaviors your child learns during the preschool years that help a child to be ready for success in kindergarten. Did you know that the brain develops more in the first five years of life than any other time?
Families are their children's first teachers. Before kindergarten there are many things families can do to support their child's transition to school. The year before kindergarten is a great time to develop school readiness! Follow along with us as we focus on academic, gross motor (big muscles), and fine motor (tiny muscles) skills each month until your child is READY FOR KINDERGARTEN!

The year before a child enters kindergarten is very important. This is a time for you to see what your child needs to know when they begin kindergarten and a time for your child to get excited about beginning school! The Cocke County Cradle to Career Coalition (C-5) works in the community offering support to all families with children. “Count Down to Kindergarten” (CDTK) is designed for families with children (most 4-year-olds) that will begin kindergarten in August 2024. The goal is to provide simple monthly skills that will help YOU know what is expected of children entering kindergarten and will help YOUR CHILD be prepared for the big jump to school.
C-5 and Empower Cocke County have worked over the past year completing the final touches to the LEAP (Learn, Empower, And Play) Center. The LEAP Center, located inside Empower Cocke County at 370 East Broadway in Classroom 4, will be home to a monthly Play and Learn Group for Countdown to Kindergarten. Up to 30 children and their caregivers will meet for either a morning or evening session. Morning sessions will be held from 10 AM to 11 AM and evening sessions will be from 6 PM to 7 PM.
A new “learning” skill and two kinds of “motor” or muscle skills will be highlighted each month. Families will receive a learning log and are asked to practice these skills with their child during daily routines. For example, you can practice the monthly skills during meals, during play time, and in the car while traveling. This is not scheduled homework- it’s finding ways to practice these skills in the things you are already doing every day. Remember the idea is making learning fun! Initial the calendar on the days that you practice a skill. For example, if you practice any of the skills on September 1, put your initials in that box on the calendar. If you practice every day, which we hope you do, initial every box. You will complete an online form every month with the numbers of days that your child has practiced these skills. This link will be printed at the bottom of each log and the survey will open on the last day of the month. Our social media pages and website will also remind you to complete this VERY important step each month. For all your hard work, three lucky parents (selected from all parents at random) will win a $25 gift card every month!
Thank you so much for including C-5 in your child’s educational journey! We do many exciting events in the community so take a moment to follow us on Facebook or Instagram at @cockecountyc5.
