What is kindergarten (school) readiness?
Kindergarten or school readiness is a measurement of the knowledge, skills and behaviors that enable children to participate and succeed when they begin school. This sets the stage for future learning and overall success. There are many different skills and behaviors your child learns during the preschool years that help a child to be ready for success in kindergarten. Our Countdown to Kindergarten (CDTK) program is designed for families with children (3 to 4 years old) starting kindergarten in August 2027 or August 2028. Each month, we'll provide simple activities to help you know what skills are important for kindergarten readiness and to make learning fun for your child.

With CDTK, three key skills are introduced each month from September through May. Families sign up to receive monthly activity ideas and learning logs delivered directly to their email. These simple, everyday activities are designed to fit naturally into family routines, such as practicing letter recognition at the grocery store or building counting skills during car rides. The focus is on making learning fun and part of daily life.
C5 and Empower Cocke County have partnered to complete the LEAP (Learn, Empower, And Play) Center at 370 East Broadway. The LEAP Center hosts a monthly Countdown to Kindergarten play group where up to 10 children and their caregivers meet to explore and prepare for upcoming monthly skills. Sessions are offered each month: 11:00–12:00 for morning group and 5:30–6:30 for evening group. |
